Dhar, 4th Dec. The Madhya Pradesh Police have filed five cases against demonstrators in Pithampur, Dhar district, following protests against the planned disposal of 337 tonnes of toxic waste linked to the Bhopal gas tragedy. The protests erupted on Friday as waste reached Ramky Enviro, a facility designated for incineration.
Prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) were imposed, banning gatherings near the facility. Dhar SP Manoj Kumar Singh confirmed that cases were registered for disrupting public peace, naming individuals in some and filing FIRs against unidentified persons in others.
The demonstrations, involving 500-600 people, were organized by Pithampur Bachao Samiti, with protesters marching to the industrial site. Two individuals attempted self-immolation during a bandh but were promptly rescued and hospitalized.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav chaired a high-level meeting, assuring the public that the government would not proceed with disposal until further court orders. He clarified that the transportation of waste adhered to the Supreme Court and High Court’s directives, with all safety measures in place.
The situation in Pithampur remains under control, with industrial operations resuming normalcy on Saturday. Protests, however, have heightened concerns over the safety and environmental implications of handling the toxic waste.
