Pithampur, 4th Jan. The Madhya Pradesh government announced plans to request additional time from the High Court for the scientific disposal of 337 tonnes of Union Carbide waste in Pithampur. The decision comes amid escalating public opposition, which has led to protests, a mob attack on the disposal site, and two attempted self-immolations.
Prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Surakhsa Sanhita (BNSS) have been imposed in the area until January 12 to maintain order.
Chief Secretary Anurag Jain reaffirmed the government’s intent to consult the public and adhere to scientific methods for waste disposal. “We will request the High Court for more time to carry out the task scientifically and with public confidence,” he stated, echoing Chief Minister Mohan Yadav’s earlier remarks.
CM Yadav, addressing the protests, assured the public that their safety remains the government’s priority. “We stand firmly with the people and will not allow any harm. The matter will be brought before the court, and actions will proceed only as per its directives,” he said after chairing a high-level meeting in Bhopal.
The waste, linked to the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy—one of the world’s deadliest industrial disasters—was recently shifted to Pithampur following a High Court directive. The tragedy resulted in the release of methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas, causing over 5,479 deaths and leaving thousands with lasting health complications.
Swatantra Kumar Singh, Director of the Gas Relief and Rehabilitation Department, previously stated that incineration could take three to nine months depending on conditions. However, Chief Minister Yadav clarified that no disposal activity would proceed until court approval is granted.
The state government faces mounting pressure to address the public’s concerns while adhering to legal and environmental obligations. Protests have underscored fears of potential harm to local communities, necessitating a balance between legal compliance and public sentiment.
