After a lengthy lay-off due to an ankle injury, Mohammed Shami has made a return to the Indian squad. The fast bowler has been picked in the T20I squad for the upcoming five-match series against England, starting on January 22. Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant aren’t part of the squad, while Abhishek Sharma retains his place. Jasprit Bumrah has been rested, with the pace bowler being laid low by a back problem.
Shami last played for India in the 50-over World Cup, in 2023. Since then, he has been sidelined by an ankle injury. He returned to competitive cricket in November last year, in the Ranji Trophy. He subsequently played in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the Vijay Hazare Trophy. However, his international return was delayed with the BCCI medical team unsure of his fitness. If Shami does well in the T20 series, he will be a sure inclusion in the Champions Trophy much to the relief of Indian cricket fans.

Sanju Samson, who has been in red hot form in T20 cricket, has been chosen as the first-choice wicketkeeper. It is a just reward for his efforts in South Africa and a selection that has to be considered fair. Dhruv Jurel has been picked as the second wicketkeeper. Rishabh Pant, who fetched the maximum money in the IPL auction in the same format, missed out.
The other interesting selection is Nitish Reddy who has been rewarded for his consistent performances in Australia. He could well be looked at as a second all-rounder after Hardik Pandya.
