Chennai, 14th Jan. A coach of a MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit) train bound for Puducherry derailed near Villupuram on Tuesday morning, though a major accident was averted when the loco pilot noticed the issue and promptly halted the train.

No injuries were reported in the incident, and train services were restored after approximately three hours. According to an official, the cause of the derailment will be determined once an inquiry, which has already been ordered, is completed.

The Villupuram-Puducherry MEMU, carrying around 500 passengers, derailed shortly after departing Villupuram at 5:25 am while crossing a curve. The quick action of the loco pilot ensured that the situation was handled without further damage. As a result, train services on the Villupuram route were disrupted until 8:30 am. The MEMU covers a short distance of approximately 38 km between Villupuram and Puducherry.
