The Trailblazer 2 Conclave was an eye-opener. Rarely does the celebration of sport happen in a cricket-obsessed country. RevSportz’s effort puts every sport — from cricket to football, Olympic disciplines and Paralympic sports — on an equal footing.
I joined RevSportz in January last year. For more than a quarter-century, I have been a cricket correspondent, covering close to 100 Tests and ODIs, and several World Cups and other ICC events. Some football assignments and occasional Davis Cup ties were thrown into the mix, but my sporting focus was a bit one-dimensional. The Conclave changed that.
First, the planning part, which was extensive. But a good plan needed to be executed properly. Team RevSportz did that through its hard work. A constellation of stars, the country’s best sporting minds, assembled in Kolkata for two days of meaningful dialogue. From legends like Abhinav Bindra, Sourav Ganguly, Leander Paes and PR Sreejesh to future stars like Shriyanka Sadangi, Sift Kaur Samra and Esha Singh turned up. The great Viswanathan Anand and Neeraj Chopra were far afield in different time zones, but they made their presence felt online.

Ganguly spoke about the importance of having a winning mentality. The man who lifted Indian cricket at the turn of the century after it was caught in the quagmire of the ‘Cronjegate’ was the best person to speak about leadership. Bindra, the Olympic gold medallist, spoke about how to handle pressure. Anand opened his heart and hearth on the chess boom in India. Little did he know that in a few months the country would get a world champion in chess. Without Anand, D Gukesh wouldn’t have happened.
MC Mary Kom and Sania Mirza spoke about how motherhood allowed them to surmount the challenges in their respective sports. Para badminton champion Manasi Joshi was a vocal advocate for women’s rights. RevSportz celebrated para-sport when it wasn’t the flavour of the country. As it turned out, circa 2024 was Indian para-sport’s annus mirabilis, with 29 medals at the Paris Paralympics.
The backstage was full of nuggets, and the Conclave offered a personal gain. It helped this correspondent become well-rounded in terms of having the right outlook towards multi-sport coverage.
