Ghaziabad, 7th Oct. In a dramatic protest, Akshay Jain, a Meerut-based iron trader, stripped down to his underwear at the Mohan Nagar GST office in Ghaziabad, alleging persistent harassment by department officials. The protest gained traction on social media, particularly after Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav shared a video of the incident on X, criticizing the Uttar Pradesh government’s treatment of traders.
“This is the truth of ‘Ease of Doing Business’ under BJP rule: the government has forced traders to strip. Traders today are saying they do not want the BJP,” Yadav wrote in Hindi on Saturday.
Jain expressed his frustration over what he termed “persistent harassment” by GST officials. However, the officials rejected his claims, stating that Jain’s company, Arihant Iron and Steel Industry, had discrepancies in a delivery challan, notably a missing weighing slip. They reported that a vehicle from Jain’s company was brought for inspection, during which he allegedly became agitated and uncooperative.
During the investigation, local GST officials found that the vehicle was carrying 170 kg more than the weight declared by Jain. A penalty of 118% was imposed, totaling ₹10,532, which Jain paid to have the vehicle released.
Denying the allegations of excess weight, Jain claimed that the officials were harassing him to extort money. “I have done nothing wrong and pleaded with the GST officials to understand my situation. Their refusal to listen prompted me to take a stand, inspired by the non-violent principles of Lord Mahavir ji,” Jain stated in an interview with PTI.
