Imphal, 17th Sept. The Manipur government has announced that schools and colleges, which have been shut due to the ongoing law and order situation, will reopen on Tuesday.
Normal classes are set to resume after being closed since September 7, following rocket attacks that killed one person and injured several others. The closure was extended as students took to the streets, demanding the restoration of peace in the ethnic-strife-hit state. The protests led to clashes with security forces, prompting the imposition of curfews in several districts.
The Directorate of Education (Schools) and the Higher and Technical Education Department issued orders for the reopening on Monday night, signaling a cautious step towards normalcy.
In a related move, the Manipur government has relaxed curfew restrictions in Imphal East, Imphal West, and Thoubal districts from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday to allow residents to purchase essential items such as food and medicine. However, gatherings, sit-ins, and rallies remain prohibited under the relaxation order.
The state has been embroiled in ethnic violence between Imphal Valley-based Meitei communities and the Kuki tribes in the surrounding hills since May last year. The ongoing conflict has claimed over 200 lives and left thousands homeless.
