Imphal, 11th Sept. The situation in Manipur’s capital, Imphal, remains tense but under control following clashes between students and security forces on Tuesday. Curfew, which was imposed after the violent incidents, continues to be enforced, and additional security personnel have been deployed to maintain order.
According to police, the conflict erupted as students marched towards the Raj Bhavan to demand the removal of the Director General of Police (DGP) and the state security advisor. During the confrontation, security forces used tear gas to disperse the crowd after students allegedly pelted them with stones in the Khwairamband and Kakwa Naorem Leikai areas.
Reports indicate that over 55 students were injured in the clashes and subsequently admitted to RIMS hospital. In response, the government issued an amended order suspending internet services exclusively in the five valley districts, aiming to curb the agitation.
In a late-night statement, the Raj Bhavan confirmed that student representatives had met Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya and submitted a memorandum outlining their demands. The governor assured them that he would take appropriate actions in the best interest of the students and the people of Manipur.
Additionally, search operations and area domination exercises are ongoing in Kangpokpi district, where police have recovered arms and explosives, according to a police statement.
Despite the heavy security presence and curfew, the authorities are working to prevent further unrest and ensure that the situation remains stable.
