New Delhi: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been served a contempt notice over her public criticism of the Supreme Court’s ruling in the School Service Commission (SSC) recruitment scam case. The notice, issued by advocate Siddharth Dutta on behalf of NGO Aatmdeep, follows the apex court’s April 3 decision upholding the Calcutta High Court’s cancellation of nearly 26,000 illegal school appointments.

The legal notice, dated April 10, comes in response to Banerjee’s fiery speech delivered on April 8, where she questioned the court’s authority to terminate jobs. “Who has the right to take anyone’s job? No one… Our Plan A is ready, B is ready, C is ready, D is ready, and E is ready… You can put me in jail for saying this. But I don’t care,” Banerjee declared, openly challenging the verdict.
The Chief Minister further alleged that the judiciary’s decision was part of a larger conspiracy to “destroy the education system” and discredit “qualified teachers” by labelling them as “thieves” and “ineligible.”
Notice Alleges “Wilful Attack” on Judiciary
The notice accuses Banerjee of making “wilful, designed and well-thought attacks” on the Supreme Court’s authority, asserting that her comments constitute a clear case of contempt. It also claims she sought to provoke non-compliance with the court’s directive and sway public sentiment against the ruling.
Key Demands of the Notice:
- Ensure full compliance with the Supreme Court’s April 3 judgment.
- Refrain from making statements that suggest defiance of the court.
- Issue an unconditional public apology to the Supreme Court.
Failure to act on these demands could invite legal action under Article 129 of the Constitution and the Contempt of Courts Act, 1971, the notice warns.
Political & Legal Implications
This development adds fresh legal complications to the ongoing fallout from the SSC recruitment scam, which has rocked West Bengal’s education sector and triggered fierce political backlash. With the Chief Minister now under the scanner for contempt, the episode is likely to intensify judicial and political scrutiny of the state government’s actions.
The SSC scam has already led to widespread protests, arrests of senior officials, and a deepening crisis in the state’s education administration. The Supreme Court’s ruling has been seen as a landmark in judicial oversight over recruitment transparency.
