Guwahati, April 6: In a significant infrastructure development for Assam, the Alignment Approval Committee (AAC) under the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) has given the green signal to the alignment plans for two major four-laning projects on National Highway 15 (NH-15). These projects aim to improve road connectivity and reduce travel time across key parts of the state.
The first project involves the four-laning of NH-15 from Baihata Chariali to the start of the Mangaldoi Bypass, establishing a vital connection between NH-15 and NH-27. This strategic link will serve as a smoother and faster route for vehicles traveling between Upper and Lower Assam and further to the Northeastern states.
The second approved project entails the four-laning of NH-15 from Mangaldoi (excluding the bypass) to Mission Chariali, a key section under the Rangia National Highway Division. This stretch will significantly enhance regional connectivity, facilitating better access to trade and transport corridors in Assam.
Officials said that the new alignments have been finalized with a focus on minimizing land acquisition challenges while ensuring optimum road design and safety. The move is part of a broader initiative by the central government to strengthen the Northeast’s road infrastructure under the Bharatmala Pariyojana and other flagship schemes.
“This approval marks an important milestone for Assam’s infrastructure development. The four-laning of NH-15 will greatly ease traffic congestion, promote economic activities, and reduce travel time between major towns,” a senior MoRTH official said.
Local stakeholders and residents have welcomed the decision, stating that improved highways will lead to better movement of goods, improved emergency response times, and enhanced connectivity for students and workers commuting between towns.
Assam’s road network, often challenged by monsoons and topographical hurdles, is expected to benefit significantly from such modernization efforts. These projects will also serve as vital alternate routes in case of disruptions on existing highways.
Once completed, the upgraded NH-15 corridor will further integrate Assam into the national highway grid, supporting the state’s aspirations for economic growth, investment, and regional integration.
The detailed project reports (DPRs) and further land acquisition processes are expected to commence soon, with execution likely to begin in the upcoming financial year.
