Prayagraj, 3rd Jan. The upcoming Mahakumbh 2025 in Prayagraj has come under a terror alert as intelligence agencies have flagged threats from Khalistani and Pakistani terrorist groups. A confidential report from the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and Local Intelligence Unit (LIU) to the state’s Home Department claims that these groups may activate sleeper cells to target the religious congregation.
The report, submitted a week ago, warns that terrorists could disguise themselves as sadhus, priests, or aghoris to infiltrate the massive gathering. To counter this, undercover police personnel in traditional attire will monitor activities in crowded areas, akhara pandals, and near the Sangam banks.
Enhanced Security Measures
The Home Department has mobilized all its wings, including ATS, STF, IB, NIA, Bomb Disposal Squads, and LIU, for a multi-layered security setup. Entry points are manned with rigorous checks, and all visitors’ details, including Aadhaar verification, are being recorded. Suspicious vehicles and individuals are subject to extensive searches, and their photos are matched against police databases.
Over 2,700 AI-enabled CCTV cameras, drones, and anti-drone systems have been deployed to enhance surveillance. Additionally, underwater drones are monitoring river activities. For the first time in Kumbh history, a dedicated cyber police station has been established, tasked with monitoring social media and preventing digital threats.
Terror Threat on Social Media
The Cyber Police and Intelligence Department have identified over 6,000 suspicious social media accounts, with several users under 24-hour surveillance. A specific threat surfaced when a user named Nasar Pathan allegedly threatened a bomb attack targeting 1,000 devotees via an Instagram post on December 31. A case has been registered at Prayagraj Kotwali, and the Cyber Police are investigating.
Historical Precedents and Khalistani Threats
The alert follows Khalistani terrorist Pannu’s December 24 threat concerning Mahakumbh, issued after the encounter of three Khalistani militants in Pilibhit. Cases regarding such threats are under investigation by Pilibhit Police.
Advanced Tech and Future Crime Research
The administration has partnered with the Future Crime Research Foundation and IIT Kanpur to implement advanced cyber patrolling. These teams are monitoring social media activity and aiding in identifying potential threats.
Unprecedented Security Activation
Initially set to commence on January 13, the three-tier security system was activated from December 31 in response to the heightened threats. The elaborate security apparatus aims to ensure the safety of millions of devotees expected at Mahakumbh 2025.
