Chennai, 1st Sept. The Madras High Court has raised questions regarding spiritual leader Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev’s encouragement of young women to renounce worldly lives and become hermits at the Isha Foundation, despite marrying off his own daughter. The court’s query came while hearing a petition filed by retired professor S Kamaraj, who alleged that his two educated daughters had been “brainwashed” into staying permanently at the Isha Yoga Centre in Coimbatore.
The daughters, aged 42 and 39, appeared in court on Monday and testified that they were staying at the center of their own free will and were not being detained. This case has been ongoing for over a decade, with the parents claiming their lives became “hell” after their daughters abandoned them for the ashram.
A bench of Justices SM Subramaniam and V Sivagnanam ordered the police to compile a list of all cases related to the Isha Foundation to further investigate the matter. Justice Sivagnanam also questioned why Sadhguru, who facilitated his daughter’s marriage, encourages others to renounce family life and live as hermits.
In response, the Isha Foundation asserted that the women were staying at the center voluntarily and highlighted that adults have the freedom to choose their paths. The organization clarified that it accommodates both monks and non-monks and stated that only one police case was pending, while another had been stayed by the court.
