Bhopal, 4th Jan. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Saturday accused the Congress government of failing to address the aftermath of the 1984 Union Carbide gas disaster, including the disposal of toxic chemical waste. The CM pointed fingers at the Congress for its inaction during its tenure, accusing them of not taking steps to clean up the hazardous waste left at the defunct factory.

Yadav, speaking at a function in Lateri, Vidisha district, remarked, “Remember during whose time the Bhopal gas tragedy occurred. It was a factory of death. Lakhs of people died, but they (Congress) did not feel ashamed.” He further criticized the Congress for allowing the factory to continue operations despite the dangers it posed.

“People died under their government, and neither did they care about the victims nor the hazardous waste,” he added, calling the Congress “ruthless” for not acting on the disposal of toxic chemicals.

The ongoing controversy erupted amidst protests at Pithampur, where 337 tons of Union Carbide waste was transported earlier this week for incineration. Yadav reassured that under the BJP government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the necessary measures were being followed as per Supreme Court and High Court directions for proper disposal.

On December 3, the Madhya Pradesh High Court had set a four-week deadline for transporting the waste to a safe disposal site.

In response, Congress leader Umang Singhar reminded the Chief Minister that the BJP had been in power for over 20 years in the state, including during the tenure of former Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. Singhar posted on X, questioning why the BJP-led governments didn’t address the Union Carbide waste issue during their rule. He also criticized Yadav’s remarks, suggesting the current CM disregarded the previous BJP leadership’s responsibility.

The 1984 Union Carbide gas leak in Bhopal remains one of the deadliest industrial disasters in history, causing over 5,479 deaths and leaving thousands with long-term health problems.
