Macron, Starmer To Meet Trump In Washington To Discuss Ukraine Crisis

Published:

French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer are set to visit Washington next week in a concerted effort to shape Europe’s role in the ongoing Ukraine conflict. The visits come amid growing concerns over U.S. President Donald Trump’s approach to the war, particularly his openness to negotiations with Moscow.

While both leaders will make separate visits, their message will be aligned that any resolution to the war must not force Ukraine into unfavorable concessions, and Europe must play a central role in shaping the path forward. Their discussions with Trump are expected to focus on ensuring long-term Western support for Ukraine, as well as reinforcing military and strategic commitments.

With the war now in its third year, European leaders worry that Trump’s push for a swift agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin could undermine Ukraine’s position. Macron, who has previously dealt with Trump during their overlapping first terms, has made it clear that a poorly negotiated settlement would not only weaken Ukraine but also embolden adversaries like China and Iran.

“I will tell him: deep down you cannot be weak in the face of President (Putin). It’s not you, it’s not what you’re made of and it’s not in your interests,” Macron said.

Starmer, making one of his first major international trips as the UK’s new prime minister, will emphasize Britain’s commitment to Ukraine’s security and European stability. His government is keen on ensuring that any peace process includes strong guarantees for Ukraine’s sovereignty and defense.

Beyond diplomacy, France and Britain are already planning concrete security measures to bolster Ukraine and its allies. Discussions are underway about deploying air and naval forces to key locations such as Poland and Romania, strengthening defensive capabilities along NATO’s eastern flank. Additionally, both countries are exploring ways to enhance cybersecurity, safeguard critical infrastructure, and protect international shipping routes in the Black Sea.
