New York, 26th Sept. French President Emmanuel Macron has reiterated his strong support for India’s inclusion as a permanent member of a reformed United Nations Security Council (UNSC). During the general debate at the 79th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, Macron called for Germany, Japan, Brazil, India, and two African nations to be granted permanent seats in the UNSC.
“Germany, Japan, India, and Brazil should be permanent members, as well as two countries that Africa would designate to represent it,” Macron stated, emphasizing the need for UN reforms to make the Security Council more effective and representative of today’s global realities.
Macron noted that the current structure of the Security Council, often hindered by conflicting interests, needs urgent reforms. He argued that the UN should not be discarded but reformed to address today’s challenges, stating, “Is there a better system? I don’t think so. So let’s make these United Nations more effective by making them more representative.”
Macron also proposed limiting the use of veto powers in cases of mass crimes and focusing on operational decisions crucial for maintaining international peace and security. He called on current permanent members to embrace these changes.
India’s push for permanent membership in the UNSC has gained widespread support. US President Joe Biden recently expressed Washington’s full backing for India’s bid during a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Chilean President Gabriel Boric Font also advocated for India’s inclusion, urging reforms to align the UNSC with modern geopolitical realities by its 80th anniversary.
Russia has continued its support, with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov emphasizing the need for better representation of developing nations in the UNSC during the ongoing UN assembly.
The growing international consensus highlights the urgency of reforming the UNSC to reflect the contemporary global order, ensuring more inclusive and effective global governance.
