New Delhi, 16th Sept. Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), and the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) have signed a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) under the Khadi Center of Excellence 2.0 (COEK 2.0) initiative. This collaboration aims to elevate the “Khadi brand” and expand its reach both domestically and internationally, in line with the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The MoU, signed by Vatsalya Saxena, CEO of KVIC, and Tanu Kashyap, Director General of NIFT, in the presence of Manoj Kumar, Chairman of KVIC, S C L Das, Secretary of the Ministry of MSME, and Joint Secretary Vipul Goyal, marks a pivotal step in enhancing the Khadi sector.

Chairman KVIC, Manoj Kumar, described the MoU as a revolutionary move aimed at creating a more sustainable and vibrant Khadi ecosystem. He emphasized that the partnership will focus on design innovation, capacity building, and market expansion. NIFT will bring its expertise in fashion design and technology to make Khadi more appealing to the youth.

Under COEK 2.0, NIFT will establish a hub center in New Delhi and spoke centers in Bengaluru, Gandhinagar, Kolkata, Guwahati, Panchkula, Hyderabad, and Bhubaneswar. These centers will work on strengthening the “Brand Khadi” through various initiatives, including the Khadi Knowledge Portal, fashion shows, exhibitions, training programs for Khadi institutions, design catalogs, and new sales outlets across the country. A dyeing studio in Assam will also be part of this effort. The Khadi Knowledge Portal Version-2.0 is set to be unveiled soon.

KVIC is committed to the vision of ‘Khadi for Nation, Khadi for Fashion, and Khadi for Transformation’ and the Viksit Bharat Abhiyan at the grassroots level. The partnership with NIFT will assist KVIC in building and designing new Khadi stores, formulating strategies, and working closely with state offices. COEK will also produce selected designs for retail sale through Khadi Bhawans and address any shortcomings in Khadi institutions, organizing capacity-building training programs for Khadi workers.

KVIC plans to invest approximately ₹25.17 crore over the next three years through COEK to enhance the quality and brand power of Khadi. The MoU signing event was attended by officials and employees from the Ministry of MSME, KVIC, and NIFT, marking a significant milestone in the promotion and development of Khadi.
