Hyderabad, 17th Sept. Union Coal Minister G. Kishan Reddy slammed both the BRS and Congress parties on Tuesday for their handling of Hyderabad Liberation Day, commemorated on September 17.
Speaking at a Central government-organized celebration marking the 76th anniversary of the merger of Hyderabad State with the Indian Union in 1948, Reddy accused successive governments in both undivided Andhra Pradesh and post-Telangana formation of neglecting the day due to “appeasement and vote bank politics.”
Reddy highlighted that, although K. Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR), the BRS supremo and Telangana Chief Minister, previously questioned the lack of official recognition for the day, he has since changed his stance. According to Reddy, Rao, influenced by his ally AIMIM, has misinterpreted the significance of Liberation Day.
While Maharashtra and Karnataka officially observe the day in districts that were part of the erstwhile Hyderabad princely state, Telangana and the previous Andhra Pradesh governments have refrained from organizing official celebrations. In contrast, the Central government, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has been celebrating the occasion for the past three years, despite the lack of support from the state government.
Reddy accused both BRS and Congress of misleading the public and suppressing the true historical significance of September 17. He emphasized that recognizing this day is crucial for understanding and honoring Telangana’s history, likening its importance to that of August 15 for India as a whole.
The BJP refers to September 17 as ‘Liberation Day,’ while the previous BRS administration labeled it ‘National Integration Day,’ and the current Congress government has celebrated it as ‘Telangana Praja Palana Dinotsavam’ (People’s Governance Day).
Reddy urged people to reject parties that disregard the significance of Telangana’s independence and to move forward with self-respect and confidence.
