Thiruvananthapuram/ Hyderabad, 4th Jan. Kerala and Telangana governments assured the public on Saturday that they are closely monitoring reports about a massive outbreak of viral fever and respiratory infections in China. Both states emphasized that there is no immediate cause for alarm.
Kerala’s Health Minister, Veena George, took to Facebook to reassure citizens, stating that no virus in China has been identified as a potential pandemic threat. She highlighted that while Malayalee expatriates frequently travel between Kerala and China, the state is prepared to respond swiftly should an outbreak pose any risk of spreading. The Minister urged high-risk groups, such as pregnant women, children, and the elderly, to remain vigilant and consider wearing masks.
In Telangana, Director of Public Health, B Ravinder Nayak, confirmed that no cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) have been reported in the state. Nayak also noted that the analysis of respiratory infection data for December 2024 showed no significant increase in cases compared to the same month the previous year. The state’s health department reassured citizens, urging them to follow preventive measures while stressing that there is no need for panic. Coordination with the Ministry of Health continues to monitor the situation.
The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) is also keeping track of respiratory and influenza cases across the country, liaising with international health bodies in response to the HMPV reports from China. Director General of Health Services, Dr. Atul Goel, categorized HMPV as a common respiratory virus, typically causing flu-like symptoms, particularly in vulnerable populations.
Authorities continue to stress the importance of caution but assert that the situation remains under control in India.
