Thiruvananthapuram, 24th Sept. A 38-year-old man in Kerala has been confirmed to have contracted the monkeypox virus, known as MPOX, after returning from the UAE. Health authorities have identified his infection as the MPOX clade 1b strain, amidst a backdrop of growing concerns about the virus’s global spread.
The World Health Organization (WHO) had previously declared the mpox outbreak a public health emergency of international concern, particularly due to a surge in cases linked to clades Ia and Ib reported in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and other regions.
According to health officials, the man arrived in Kerala a few days ago and was initially admitted to a private hospital after exhibiting symptoms. Upon suspicion of monkeypox, his samples were sent for testing at Kozhikode Medical College. Currently, the patient is reported to be stable.
Kerala Health Minister Veena George confirmed the mpox case, noting the man’s travel history and subsequent hospital admission. This incident marks the first case of the clade 1b strain in India since the WHO’s second declaration of mpox as a public health emergency last month.
Prior to this case, a 26-year-old man from Hisar, Haryana, tested positive for the West African clade 2 strain of mpox. The Health Ministry stated that the Hisar patient is currently isolated and remains clinically stable, free from systemic illness or comorbidities.
As health officials continue to monitor the situation, they emphasize the importance of vigilance and public awareness regarding mpox and its transmission.
