Thiruvananthapuram, 5th Oct. A Kerala court discharged BJP state president K Surendran and five others from the Manjeshwaram election bribery case on Saturday. The decision was made by Kasaragod Sessions Judge Sanu S Panicker, who stated that the case would not stand prima facie.
Surendran’s lawyer reported that the court accepted the defense’s argument, asserting there was no need for a trial. The defense successfully demonstrated that the allegations were fabricated and politically motivated.
Following the verdict, Surendran maintained his stance that “truth will prevail,” alleging a conspiracy involving leaders from CPI(M), Congress, and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) to tarnish his political career.
The case stemmed from accusations that Surendran had intimidated a rival candidate to withdraw from the contest during the 2021 assembly polls. He faced charges under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, as well as bribery provisions of the Indian Penal Code. The Crime Branch filed a charge sheet against him last January, based on allegations from BSP candidate Sundara, who claimed he was threatened and bribed ₹2.5 lakh to withdraw his candidacy.
However, Surendran lost the election from Manjeswaram, with IUML’s A K M Ashraf winning the seat.
