New Delhi, 19th Jan. In a high-voltage political clash ahead of the February 5 Delhi Assembly elections, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s car was allegedly attacked by “goons of the BJP” during campaigning in the New Delhi Assembly constituency on Saturday. The incident has sparked a war of words between the AAP and the BJP, with both parties hurling accusations at each other.
AAP leader Atishi, during a press conference on Sunday, alleged that two individuals, identified as Shanky (Rahul) and Rohit Tyagi, were behind the attack and accused them of being close associates of BJP candidate Parvesh Verma. Releasing photographs of the two men, Atishi claimed they are BJP workers frequently seen campaigning with Verma.
“Shanky is a Vice President of the BJP and has a criminal record with cases of attempted murder, assault, and robbery filed against him at Shakarpur and Paharganj Police Stations. Rohit Tyagi is also a known criminal with similar charges against him. These individuals, closely associated with the BJP, were sent to attack Arvind Kejriwal,” Atishi alleged.
She further stated that the attack was a deliberate attempt by “hardcore criminals” to intimidate the Delhi Chief Minister. According to her, the incident underscores the BJP’s desperation in the face of the AAP’s popularity in the constituency.
BJP Hits Back, Alleges Kejriwal’s Car Hit Local Youths
Countering the allegations, BJP candidate Parvesh Verma accused Kejriwal’s car of hitting three youths who wanted to speak to him during the campaign. Addressing the media, Verma said, “The AAP chief’s vehicle hit three local youths, one of whom had his phone damaged in the incident. The trio claimed they approached Kejriwal’s car to ask him about jobs, but the car moved forward and struck them.”
Verma described the youths as local residents and voters, dismissing AAP’s allegations of them being “goons.” He announced plans to file a police complaint against Kejriwal, accusing him of “attempted murder.”
Videos of the incident, reportedly shot by locals, were cited by Verma to support his claims. “Will Kejriwal call anyone who questions him about jobs a goon? The public is simply asking why his party’s guarantees remain unfulfilled,” Verma remarked.
Rising Political Tensions
The New Delhi Assembly seat is witnessing a fierce contest between Kejriwal and Verma, with the BJP pulling out all stops to challenge AAP’s hold on Delhi since 2015. The confrontation adds to the already heated political environment, as both parties intensify their campaigns ahead of the elections.
The Delhi Assembly elections will decide the fate of the 70-member legislature, with the BJP aiming to end its 25-year-long wait for power in the capital. Meanwhile, AAP continues to highlight its governance record, positioning Kejriwal as a leader of the people.
