President Joe Biden commemorated Veterans Day on Monday with a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, paying tribute to the nation’s fallen soldiers. This event marks Biden’s first public appearance with Vice President Kamala Harris since her electoral defeat to Donald Trump last week. It also marks Harris’s first appearance since her concession speech on November 6.

The ceremony, held at the historic Arlington cemetery across the Potomac from Washington, comes as Democrats face internal discussions and reflections on Harris’s loss. Many within the party have attributed the defeat in part to Biden’s decision to seek re-election at age 81, despite previously positioning himself as a bridge to the next generation of leadership.
Before visiting Arlington, Biden hosted veterans at the White House to observe the holiday. At the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Biden and Harris participated in a poignant wreath-laying ceremony, each placing a hand over their heart in honor of the service members buried there. The president is scheduled to deliver remarks at the cemetery’s Memorial Amphitheater, where he is expected to pay tribute to veterans’ sacrifices.
Biden is set to host Trump at the White House on Wednesday, in what will be their first meeting following the election results.
