Kolkata, 13th Sept. Junior doctors in West Bengal have continued their ‘cease work’ and sit-in demonstration outside the state health department headquarters, ‘Swathya Bhavan,’ for the third consecutive day on Friday. The ongoing protest follows the collapse of proposed talks between the agitating junior doctors and the Bengal government regarding the RG Kar hospital issue.
On Friday, around 30 medics from 26 medical colleges participated in the protest and had traveled to Nabanna for a scheduled meeting. However, the talks did not proceed as the government refused the doctors’ demand for live-streaming the discussions.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee stated that the meeting could not be live-streamed due to the matter being sub-judice before the Supreme Court. Instead, the government offered to record the meeting and provide the footage with the court’s permission.
The junior doctors have vowed to continue their demonstration until their demands are addressed. These include the suspension of several officials: the Police Commissioner, Health Secretary, Director of Health Services, and Director of Medical Education. Despite their desire to resume work, the doctors insist that a transparent dialogue, facilitated through live-streaming, is essential.
The protest has garnered significant public support, with many individuals showing solidarity by providing food and essentials. One father expressed his appreciation by distributing sweets to the protesting doctors, emphasizing the importance of their cause for the future of his child.
The state government and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee have repeatedly urged the doctors to return to work. Despite the failure of Thursday’s talks, the doctors remain firm in their demands and continue their protest. A large police presence has been deployed around ‘Swathya Bhavan’ to ensure law and order and manage traffic.
