Kolkata, 5th Oct. Despite calling off their ‘total cease work’ on Friday, junior doctors in West Bengal continued their sit-in protest on Saturday in central Kolkata, demanding justice for a deceased woman medic from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The protest follows an alleged police baton charge during a rally on Friday.
The demonstrators braved the rain overnight at Esplanade, some holding umbrellas, while others took shelter under makeshift plastic shades. Their demands include the removal of the state Health Secretary N.S. Nigam and an investigation into alleged corruption and mismanagement in the health department.
“We anticipated better treatment from the state government. The baton charge and verbal abuse from the police were unnecessary, and we demand an apology,” said Debasish Halder, a representative of the protesting doctors.
The junior doctors have threatened to begin a hunger strike if their demands, including improved hospital facilities, enhanced security, and accountability within the West Bengal Medical Council (WBMC), are not met within 24 hours. A large clock was placed at the protest site, symbolizing the countdown to government action.
The demonstration, which drew support from medics across multiple hospitals, has caused significant traffic disruptions. Police forces were stationed at the protest site to manage the situation.
The junior doctors’ strike comes in the wake of a 42-day “cease work” following the rape-murder of a fellow medic on August 9, and a subsequent attack on medics by a patient’s family last week.
