New Delhi, 23rd Sept. The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the Waqf Bill has received more than 1.2 crore suggestions so far. Established to gather public input on the bill, the JPC, chaired by BJP leader Jagdambika Pal, called for suggestions via email and written letters from the general public. As of September 22, over 1.2 crore email responses have been collected.
Sources indicate that the committee has also received 75,000 responses with supporting documents, necessitating a request for additional staff from the Lok Sabha Secretariat to manage the influx. To expedite the process of reviewing, classifying, and recording the email responses, 15 extra personnel have been deployed.
The Waqf Bill has sparked considerable political debate recently, drawing attention from various factions. Radical Islamic preacher Zakir Naik has urged his supporters to send feedback to the parliamentary committee in opposition to the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, resulting in a wave of emails from across the country. In contrast, several Hindu groups have called on their supporters to write in support of the bill.
Additionally, the committee has solicited written suggestions from non-governmental organizations, experts, and institutions. It plans to embark on a comprehensive tour of five cities starting September 26, which will include visits to Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Bengaluru.
During this tour, the committee aims to gather feedback from government officials, legal experts, Waqf Board members, and community representatives to gain insights into public opinion regarding the Waqf Bill.
