Ranchi, 14th Oct. The Jharkhand cabinet approved an increase in financial assistance for women under the Jharkhand Mukhyamantri Maiyan Samman Yojana (JMMSY), raising the amount to ₹30,000 per annum, up from the current ₹12,000. This enhancement will benefit around 50 lakh women in the state, effective from December 2024.

Previously, the scheme provided ₹1,000 per month to women aged 18-50. With the recent decision, this assistance will increase to ₹2,500 per month, adding an additional burden of ₹9,000 crore to the state’s finances, as announced by Cabinet Secretary Vandana Dadel.

The decision follows a memorandum submitted by the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) to the Election Commission, seeking permission to implement the enhanced scheme in the poll-bound state. The current legislative assembly’s term is set to expire on January 5, 2025.

Chief Minister Hemant Soren emphasized his commitment to implementing schemes, dismissing opposition criticism. “The opposition will not be able to hatch their conspiracy this time,” Soren remarked.

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has promised financial assistance of ₹25,000 per year for women if elected to power. As part of their campaign, the BJP has distributed application forms, pledging to provide the amount on the 11th of each month.

On October 8, the Jharkhand government transferred ₹497 crore to the bank accounts of approximately 50 lakh women as part of the third instalment of the JMMSY scheme. The JMM had launched this initiative on August 18, with the first instalment reaching 81,000 beneficiaries in Pakur district. The state now awaits approval from the Election Commission for the scheme’s broader implementation as per guidelines.
