JAMMU: A sharp rise in infiltration attempts by heavily armed terrorists along the International Border in the Jammu sector has triggered heightened security measures, with authorities cracking down on overground workers (OGWs) aiding the infiltrators.

Security agencies in Jammu and Kashmir report that over the past year, more than four dozen terrorists have crossed into India and established bases in the upper reaches of the Pir Panjal range. Intelligence inputs indicate that the number of foreign terrorists affiliated with Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) has surged, now outnumbering local militants by five to one.
According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, around 120 terrorists are currently active in J&K, with only about 20 being locals. The rest are believed to be foreign-trained operatives who infiltrated across the border.
Last month, a heavily armed group of terrorists ambushed a Jammu and Kashmir Rifles patrol vehicle in Rajouri’s Sunderbani area. Investigations revealed the attackers had freshly infiltrated into J&K, and security forces are still tracking them.
Amid rising concerns, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan chaired a high-level review meeting earlier this month, focusing on border security and infiltration trends. Following the meeting, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) conducted raids across 12 locations in Jammu on Wednesday, targeting premises linked to alleged terrorist sympathizers.
The NIA stated that the raids focused on OGWs associated with newly formed offshoots of banned outfits like LeT and JeM. These operatives are believed to have provided logistical support, including food, shelter, funds, and guidance through the treacherous terrain, ensuring the terrorists’ safe passage.
Authorities believe the infiltrators have since moved towards the hinterland, spreading across districts like Kathua, Udhampur, Doda, Kishtwar, Reasi, Rajouri, Poonch, and further into the Kashmir valley.
With intelligence reports warning of a potential spike in infiltration attempts in the coming months, security forces remain on high alert, intensifying operations to dismantle terror networks operating in the region.
