Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has given preliminary approval to a ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah, according to reports. The decision was made during a security consultation with top Israeli officials. However, the proposal remains subject to final approval from the Israeli security cabinet, which is scheduled to convene tomorrow to deliberate further.
Israel has expressed reservations about certain provisions within the draft agreement. These concerns are set to be communicated to the Lebanese government following tomorrow’s meeting, signaling that key details remain unresolved. Officials have stressed that the ceasefire will only be finalized once all outstanding issues are addressed.
The proposed ceasefire, backed by the United States, aims to establish a 60-day cessation of hostilities, potentially serving as a precursor to more enduring peace negotiations. US envoy Amos Hochstein, instrumental in mediating talks, described recent discussions in Beirut as “constructive” and expressed optimism about bridging the remaining gaps. During his visit, Hochstein met with Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, who plays a key role in representing Hezbollah’s interests.
However, the process remains fragile. Axios, citing Barak Ravid, reported that Hochstein had warned Israel’s ambassador to Washington that US mediation efforts may be withdrawn if Israel fails to respond favorably within days.
The military conflict between Israel and Hezbollah escalated in mid-September following border skirmishes. The violence intensified on October 8, when Hezbollah launched attacks on Israeli-controlled territories in solidarity with Hamas and Palestinians in Gaza. This backdrop of ongoing clashes continues to pose a significant threat to the ceasefire negotiations, with officials cautioning that a single misstep could derail the agreement.
