Patna, 26th Sept. An alleged assault on two young men from Bihar in Siliguri, West Bengal, has ignited a political controversy, drawing sharp criticism from Union Ministers Chirag Paswan and Giriraj Singh. The incident, reportedly involving a group claiming to be police officers, occurred as the two men attended a physical examination for a Staff Selection Commission (SSC) recruitment.
A video, whose authenticity is yet to be verified, purportedly shows the two men being forced to apologize, perform sit-ups, and one being thrown against a wall. The attackers accused them of possessing forged domicile certificates, which establish residency in a state.
Chirag Paswan, Minister for Food Processing Industries and a member of the ruling NDA, questioned the legitimacy of the assault, stating, “Is it a crime to take an exam in West Bengal?” He condemned the incident and called for a thorough investigation by Bihar’s Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, emphasizing the need for legal action against the perpetrators. Paswan also criticized the RJD and Congress, allies of Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress, for their silence on the matter.
Giriraj Singh, BJP’s Textiles Minister, also shared the video, alleging a double standard in the state’s treatment of individuals, suggesting that while Rohingya Muslims are welcomed, Bihari students face violence. He alluded to recent high-profile criminal cases in Kolkata, questioning whether the West Bengal government is prioritizing the protection of rapists over the safety of its citizens.
The video depicts the two men being confronted in their room, questioned about their origins, and subsequently accused of unlawfully participating in the exam. One of the men, Ankit Yadav, explains that they were assigned to the Siliguri center. However, the group asserts that only those with domicile status in West Bengal should be allowed to apply for that location. As tensions rise, Yadav requests to be taken to a police station but is met with physical intimidation.
The incident has raised alarm about the treatment of out-of-state individuals in West Bengal, with both Union Ministers calling for accountability from the Mamata Banerjee government. The fallout from this event continues to unfold, with demands for justice and action reverberating across political lines.
