New Delhi, 5th Oct. Iranian Ambassador to India, Iraj Elahi, emphasized India’s potential as a “big power” and a “voice” of the Global South to facilitate conflict de-escalation in West Asia during an exclusive interview with PTI Videos. His remarks come amid rising tensions from the Israel-Hezbollah conflict and the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.

Elahi noted that while Iran maintains close relations with Russia and China, it has not directly contacted India but has invited India and other influential countries to encourage Israel to de-escalate tensions. He stated, “We believe that the region needs peace and stability… but we cannot be indifferent to what is happening in Palestine.”

Addressing recent military operations, Elahi asserted that Iran’s missile strikes on Israeli military targets were intended to send a strong message to Israel, underscoring Iran’s commitment to respond decisively to attacks on its interests.

He also highlighted the historical ties between Iran and India, stating, “Our relationship goes back 2,000 years, whereas India and Israel’s relationship is not that old.” Elahi expressed hope that India would leverage its influence for peace in the region.

Additionally, the ambassador assured that Iran remains a safe country for Indian nationals and emphasized the security of the international corridor crucial for India-Iran relations, citing the importance of Chabahar Port.
