Bhagalpur- Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday released the 19th instalment of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme from Bhagalpur, Bihar, crediting approximately ₹22,000 crore directly into the bank accounts of farmers. He also launched several development projects aimed at enhancing Bihar’s agricultural, infrastructure, and industrial growth.
During the event, PM Modi highlighted the importance of the PM-KISAN scheme, noting that around 75 lakh farmers in Bihar benefitted from the latest disbursement, with approximately ₹1,600 crore reaching their accounts. He emphasized the government’s continued efforts towards farmer welfare, stating that “every single penny of this scheme has reached directly into the accounts of our Annadatas in the last six years.”
Key Announcements and Initiatives:
Formation of Makhana Vikas Board: PM Modi announced the establishment of a dedicated board to support Makhana farmers in Bihar, focusing on production, processing, value addition, and global marketing of this superfood.
10,000th Farmer Producer Organization (FPO): Bihar witnessed the formation of India’s 10,000th FPO, marking a milestone in strengthening the agricultural ecosystem.
PM Dhan-Dhanya Yojana: The Prime Minister introduced this initiative to boost crop production in agriculturally backward districts, aiming to empower small and marginal farmers.
Enhancing Dairy Sector: PM Modi noted the growth of India’s dairy industry, highlighting Bihar’s contribution and the increasing income of livestock farmers. He emphasized projects like the Center of Excellence in Motihari and a new milk plant in Barauni, benefiting over three lakh farmers.
Boosting Fisheries and Silk Industry: The government’s efforts in supporting fishermen with Kisan Credit Cards and enhancing Bhagalpur’s silk production were also underscored.
Infrastructure Development: PM Modi announced major infrastructure projects, including the construction of a four-lane bridge over the Ganga River with an investment of over ₹1,100 crore. He also highlighted ongoing flood-control initiatives like the Western Kosi Canal ERM Project, which will bring 50,000 hectares of land under irrigation in the Mithilanchal region.
National Institute of Food Technology & Entrepreneurship: The establishment of this institute, along with three Centers of Excellence in agriculture, aims to position Bihar as a major hub for food processing industries in Eastern India.
Commitment to Viksit Bharat
PM Modi reiterated the four pillars of his vision for a developed India—poor, farmers, youth, and women. He emphasized that the government has worked relentlessly to resolve farmers’ issues over the past decade, ensuring access to quality seeds, affordable fertilizers, modern irrigation, and disaster protection through the PM Fasal Bima Yojana.
Highlighting the government’s role in keeping urea prices low for farmers, he noted that Indian farmers pay less than ₹300 per bag, compared to ₹3,000 in many other countries. He credited the government’s subsidies, amounting to ₹12 lakh crore over the last decade, for significantly reducing farmers’ financial burdens.
Bihar’s Role in India’s Development
PM Modi lauded Bihar’s historical and cultural significance, calling Bhagalpur the “Silk City” and acknowledging the contributions of martyr Tilka Manjhi. He expressed confidence that Bihar, once considered an economic powerhouse, would reclaim its stature in a developed India.
Concluding his address, he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening Bihar’s economy, enhancing connectivity, and improving the livelihoods of its people through transformative policies and investments.
