Speaking at the indigenisation event and valedictory ceremony of Aero India 2025, Singh highlighted the increasing adoption of indigenous defence products by the armed forces, emphasizing that when it comes to national security, “nothing less than the best can be allowed.”
Indigenisation and Defence Exports
The Defence Minister underscored India’s shift from an import-dependent defence sector to one that is largely self-reliant. “A decade ago, 65-70% of defence equipment was imported. Today, almost the same percentage is being manufactured within the country,” he stated.
India is now exporting a wide range of defence equipment, from small artillery to large platforms such as the BrahMos and Akash missile systems, strengthening defence partnerships worldwide. Singh attributed this progress to the firm resolve, conviction, and trust of stakeholders in India’s defence industry.
Growth of India’s Defence Industry
Highlighting the rapid expansion of India’s defence industrial complex, he noted that it includes 16 Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs), 430 licensed companies, and about 16,000 MSMEs. The private sector has also played a crucial role, currently contributing 21% of total defence production.
The government has been working to remove uncertainties and ensure a level playing field for the private sector, bringing in policies that promote both public and private participation in defence manufacturing.
India as a Global Leader in Defence Innovation
Expressing confidence in India’s aerospace and defence capabilities, Singh stated, “India is now moving towards becoming not just a participant but also a global leader in defence innovation and aerospace technology.”
The 15th edition of Aero India saw record-breaking participation, with:
- 500+ delegates from 84 countries
- 931 exhibitors, including 782 Indian firms
- 58 Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs)
- 115 global CEOs
Singh described the energy and enthusiasm at Aero India 2025 as “unparalleled and historic,” noting that the event’s impact would be long-lasting.
With the business segment of Aero India concluding on February 12, the next two days will be open to the public for aero show demonstrations.
