Gorakhpur, 15th Sept. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, on Sunday, highlighted India’s rich democratic heritage, asserting that Indian civilization has been rooted in democratic values since ancient times. Speaking at an event titled “Loktantra kee Janani hai Bharat” (India is the mother of democracy) in Gorakhpur, he emphasized the nation’s historical commitment to democracy, human values, and the welfare of all.
“When the world had yet to adopt civilization and human values, India’s culture and life values were at their peak. Our civilization was not built on conquering others but on the principle of ‘Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah’ (May all be happy, all be free of illness),” Adityanath remarked.
The Chief Minister linked these ancient values to modern India, noting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’ policy embodies the same ethos of inclusive growth. He praised India’s rishi (sage) tradition of “live and let live” as the true form of democracy, attributing its origins to India.
The event, which marked the 55th death anniversary of Mahant Digvijaynath and the 10th death anniversary of Mahant Avaidyanath, was also attended by Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha, Harivansh, as the chief guest.
Adityanath pointed to numerous references to democracy in India’s ancient texts, from the Vedic period to the Ramayana and Mahabharata. “In Indian democracy, the voice and interests of the people have always been given paramount importance,” he said. He also noted that Lord Krishna did not consider himself a king, instead allowing governance to be handled by a council, further reflecting India’s democratic traditions.
The Chief Minister cited the ancient Vaishali Republic as a prime example of a people-centric governance system. He urged all Indians to take pride in the country’s democratic foundations and its rapidly growing economy built on these principles.
