New Delhi, 12th Oct. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh stated on Saturday that India has never attacked any country out of hatred or contempt; however, he emphasized that if India’s interests are threatened, “we will not hesitate to take a big step.” Singh made these remarks during the “Shastra Puja” (worship of weapons) ceremony at the Sukna military station in West Bengal, coinciding with the Vijayadashami festival.
The minister, addressing personnel at the Sukna-based 33 Corps—responsible for guarding the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China in the Sikkim sector—underscored the importance of military preparedness. “Shastra Puja is a clear indication that if need be, weapons and equipment will be used with full force,” he stated.
“India has never attacked any country out of hatred or contempt. We fight only when someone insults or tries to harm our integrity and sovereignty, or when war is waged against religion, truth, and human values,” Singh continued, reaffirming India’s legacy of defensive engagement.
Earlier, Singh shared photographs of the ritual on X (formerly Twitter), highlighting the long-standing tradition of weapon worship in India. The ceremony symbolizes the respect for weapons as protectors of national sovereignty. The event was attended by top military officials, including Army Chief Gen Upendra Dwivedi and General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Eastern Command Lt Gen Ram Chander Tiwari.
Singh initiated the rituals with ‘Kalash Puja,’ followed by ‘Shastra Puja’ and ‘Vahan Puja,’ emphasizing the cultural and spiritual significance of Dussehra, which celebrates the victory of good over evil. The Defence Ministry stated that these rituals symbolize the resolve and dedication of the armed forces to safeguard the nation.
The minister also interacted with troops at the Sukna military station, reinforcing the importance of maintaining peace and stability along India’s borders. Singh was originally scheduled to address the Army Commanders Conference in Gangtok but shifted to a video conference due to adverse weather conditions.
The conference took place amid ongoing border tensions in eastern Ladakh, and Singh expressed confidence in the Indian Army’s capability to handle any contingency. He noted that talks with China for a peaceful resolution of the border row “will continue at all levels.”
