The dispute centers around border fencing activities by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) near the Indo-Bangladesh boundary. Bangladesh’s Foreign Secretary, Md Jashim Uddin, expressed his government’s strong objections to these actions, calling them “unauthorized attempts” that have disrupted peace in the region. The Bangladeshi official also raised concerns over the recent death of a Bangladeshi citizen in Sunamganj, allegedly caused by BSF personnel.
In a statement, the Bangladesh Foreign Ministry urged India to halt its activities, stating that they were causing unnecessary tension and undermining trust between the two nations. The Bangladesh Foreign Ministry had raised “deep concern” over the recent fencing along the Indo-Bangladesh border.
In response to these concerns, Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma assured Dhaka of New Delhi’s commitment to a peaceful resolution of border issues. Speaking after his meeting with the Bangladeshi Foreign Secretary, Verma highlighted India’s focus on enhancing security along the border while working collaboratively with Bangladesh to combat issues such as smuggling, trafficking, and cross-border crime.
“Our two border guard forces, BSF and BGB have been in communication and understanding will be implemented and co-operative approach to combating crimes,” Verma stated. He emphasized that both nations must continue to work together to address shared challenges while maintaining respect for each other’s concerns.
