After the announcement made by US President-elect Donald Trump that his inauguration on Monday will take place inside the US Capitol rather than outdoors because of severe cold, the first time in 40 years that US presidential inaugural ceremonies will be moved indoors.
The last inauguration to be moved indoors because of the bitter cold was in 1985, for former Republican President Ronald Reagan’s second swearing-in.
According to Ronald Reagan’s Presidential Library And Museum website, the 1985 Inauguration occurred during a severe cold snap on the East Coast. The decision was made to cancel the outdoor public events for the Inauguration, so there was no ceremony outdoors, and the Inaugural parade was cancelled. President Reagan held his public Inaugural in the US Capitol building Rotunda.
