New Delhi, 6th Jan. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has identified two cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in Karnataka during routine surveillance for respiratory viral pathogens. These cases were detected as part of ICMR’s ongoing monitoring efforts for respiratory illnesses.
Case Details:
- 3-Month-Old Female Infant: Diagnosed with HMPV after being admitted to Baptist Hospital, Bengaluru, with bronchopneumonia. The infant has since been discharged.
- 8-Month-Old Male Infant: Tested positive for HMPV on January 3, 2025, also at Baptist Hospital, Bengaluru, with a history of bronchopneumonia. He is currently recovering.
Neither infant has a history of international travel, and no unusual surge in Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) or Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) cases has been reported, according to data from ICMR and the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP).
Global Context and Preparedness:
HMPV, a globally circulating virus, has previously been linked to respiratory illnesses in India and other countries. The Union Health Ministry emphasized that surveillance systems remain robust and capable of addressing any potential health concerns.
The recent nationwide preparedness drill demonstrated India’s readiness to handle any rise in respiratory illnesses. Public health interventions can be rapidly deployed if required, with guidance from the World Health Organization (WHO) regarding global updates on respiratory pathogens.
The Health Ministry continues to monitor the situation and assures the public that necessary measures are in place to safeguard health and well-being.
