New Delhi, 5th Oct. The Union Home Ministry firmly rejected allegations of attempts to limit the powers of the upcoming chief minister or the next elected government in Jammu and Kashmir. This response comes after former chief minister Omar Abdullah raised concerns regarding bureaucratic pressures to “disempower” the incoming administration.
In a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s Office, the ministry clarified that Abdullah’s comments were “misleading and speculative” and stated, “There is not even an iota of truth, as there is absolutely no such proposal.”
Abdullah had expressed his concerns on X, questioning the decision to assign the chief secretary the task of altering government transaction rules, which he believed would undermine the chief minister’s authority in favor of the Lieutenant Governor.
The Home Minister’s Office emphasized that the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act of 2019, passed by Parliament, lays out the framework for these transaction rules, which were officially notified in 2020. The ministry also praised the citizens of Jammu and Kashmir for their enthusiastic participation in the recent assembly elections, which saw a turnout of 63.88% as of October 1.
Abdullah urged administrative officers to resist any pressures that may seek to further undermine the forthcoming elected government, asserting the need for a fair and empowered governance structure.
The election results for the Jammu and Kashmir assembly are set to be announced on October 8, following a three-phased polling process.
