New Delhi, 15th Sept. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has released the second edition of ‘Hindi Kahavat Kosh’, a book authored by renowned physician Sharad Agrawal from Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh. The book, a rich compilation of over 10,000 Hindi proverbs and more than 200 stories explaining their origins, aims to preserve and promote the Hindi linguistic heritage.

The book was released on Saturday during the fourth Akhil Bharatiya Rajbhasha Sammelan, held to celebrate Hindi Diwas. In his address, Shah praised the book, stating that reading it would significantly enhance his command of the Hindi language.

Agrawal, driven by his passion for language preservation, shared that the idea for the book originated from his grandmother. Over the course of 20 years, he collected proverbs from various sources, including books and the internet. The first edition, released in 2021, contained 5,400 proverbs. This new edition not only expands the collection but also adds stories and illustrations to help readers understand the context and origins of the sayings.

“The main objective of this project is to preserve these proverbs for future generations,” Agrawal explained. “I believe that increased awareness of these sayings will further enrich the Hindi language and people’s vocabulary.”

In addition to his literary efforts, Agrawal runs healthhindi.in, a website that provides health information in simple Hindi to promote health awareness.

Looking ahead, Agrawal plans to include folk songs in future editions, continuing his mission to safeguard India’s cultural and linguistic heritage. He emphasized the importance of preserving folk literature, which includes proverbs, idioms, folk songs, and puzzles passed down through generations, now at risk of being forgotten due to the rise of social media.

“This book is the largest collection of Hindi proverbs and the stories related to them,” he said, adding that it also features illustrations of objects mentioned in the proverbs, many of which are unfamiliar to younger generations. He hopes this effort will help preserve the treasure trove of folk literature for future generations.
