New Delhi, 17th Sept. Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Tuesday that the government is actively engaging with both the Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur to achieve long-term peace, while taking steps to curb infiltration along the India-Myanmar border.

During a press conference marking the achievements of the Modi government’s first 100 days in office, Shah highlighted ongoing efforts to restore stability in the violence-stricken state.

Shah noted that aside from three days of unrest last week, the situation in Manipur has remained largely calm, and the government is committed to bringing peace to the region. “We are in discussions with both communities to maintain peace and are working on a roadmap for permanent resolution in Manipur,” he said.

As part of broader security measures, Shah revealed that 30 km of fencing along the India-Myanmar border has been completed, with plans underway to extend this to 1,500 km. Additionally, the government has abolished the India-Myanmar Free Movement Regime (FMR), which previously allowed border residents to travel 16 km into each other’s territory without documentation. “Now, entry will only be allowed with a visa,” Shah stated.

The 1,643 km India-Myanmar border, which spans across Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh, had implemented the FMR as part of India’s Act East policy in 2018.

The Home Minister’s updates come amidst continued ethnic violence in Manipur that erupted on May 3 last year, following a protest by tribal groups against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status. Since then, more than 220 people, including members of the Meitei and Kuki communities, as well as security forces, have lost their lives in the conflict.
