Guwahati, 1st Jan. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday shared insights from his recent visit to Bhutan, highlighting his focus on understanding the potential of the Gelephu Mindful City (GMC). Gelephu, a strategically located town on the Assam-Bhutan border, offers significant accessibility to various districts within Bhutan, making it a key area of interest for future collaboration.
During an interaction with journalists, Sarma emphasized the transformative potential of GMC, stating, “The city, once developed, will change the entire economy of the region.” He further noted that the King of Bhutan was keen on encouraging investments from billionaires, inviting them to Gelephu to stay in luxury hotels and invest in projects across Assam, particularly in districts such as Kokrajhar, Chirang, and Bongaigaon.
Sarma clarified that Assam’s objective was not to create a twin city but to complement the development in Gelephu. Additionally, he revealed that Bhutan had offered Assam the opportunity to utilize its water resources for irrigation and power projects.
“My visit to Bhutan was a landmark one, which was made possible by External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, and its impact will be felt 30 years from now,” Sarma said. The visit, which took place from December 16, was at the invitation of the King of Bhutan for the country’s National Day celebrations.
Looking ahead, Sarma announced that Bhutan’s Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay would visit Guwahati during the ‘Advantage Assam’ conclave in February. The Royal Highness King Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuk has also expressed plans to visit Assam with his family in 2025.
