Imphal, 19th Oct. Fresh violence erupted in the Jiribam district of Manipur on Saturday morning when militants launched an armed attack on a village near the Borobekra police station. The assault, which occurred around 5 am, involved the use of sophisticated weapons and explosive devices, as reported by an official.
In response to the attack, personnel from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and local police engaged in a heavy exchange of gunfire with the militants. Additional security forces have been dispatched to the scene to reinforce the response.
As of now, no casualties have been reported, but security forces have begun evacuating elderly residents, women, and children to safer locations amidst the escalating violence.
Borobekra, situated approximately 30 kilometers from Jiribam town, is surrounded by dense forests and rugged terrain, making it vulnerable to such militant activities. The area has experienced several violent incidents since ethnic clashes erupted in the state in May last year.
This resurgence of violence comes just days after discussions among MLAs from the conflicting Meitei and Kuki communities in New Delhi aimed at finding a peaceful resolution to the ongoing turmoil in Manipur. The situation remains tense as security forces continue to monitor and respond to the conflict.
