As France takes charge of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the month, it has placed the long-pending issue of reforming the council high on its agenda, with a strong emphasis on India’s inclusion as a permanent member.

The French Embassy in India, in an announcement on Monday, underscored that France will use its presidency to steer critical discussions on global security challenges and humanitarian issues while advocating for structural changes to the UNSC. In a statement posted on X, the Embassy highlighted France’s commitment to reshaping the Security Council to reflect contemporary geopolitical realities.

France’s latest push for UNSC reforms aligns with the discussions held earlier this year between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron. During their February meeting, both leaders reaffirmed their shared commitment to overhauling the Security Council to better represent the modern world order.
France once again pledged its unwavering support for India’s permanent membership and agreed to collaborate closely with New Delhi in international forums to advance this objective. Beyond the UNSC reform, the Modi-Macron dialogue also covered key global security concerns, including the need for responsible use of veto power, particularly in cases of mass human rights violations.
France has been a vocal advocate of India’s inclusion in the Security Council for several years. In his address at the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) last year, President Macron publicly backed India’s bid, citing its growing role in global diplomacy and security.
