Four UNLF (P) Members Injured in Arambai Tenggol Attack in Manipur

Published:

Imphal: Four members of the United National Liberation Front (Pambei), or UNLF (P), were injured in an alleged attack by 15-20 suspected members of Arambai Tenggol (AT) in Manipur, police reported on Sunday. The UNLF (P) had signed a ceasefire agreement with the Centre and the Manipur government in November 2023.

The altercation occurred on Saturday when suspected AT members arrived at the residence of UNLF (P) functionary Irengbam Nandakumar Singh, alias Tonsana, 56, leading to a violent clash. Reports suggest gunfire from both sides, though the injured UNLF (P) members sustained only blunt injuries and are in stable condition after being hospitalized.

Following the incident, security forces raided AT Unit-17 under Imphal East district’s Porompat police station, recovering incriminating materials, including a suspected heroin stash and an INSAS rifle bayonet.

This clash adds to the ongoing ethnic tensions between the valley-dominant Meitei community and the Kuki tribes, which have flared since May 2023. The conflict has claimed over 250 lives and displaced nearly 50,000 people. UNLF (P) remains the only Meitei insurgent group to have entered a ceasefire, while the Kuki insurgents operate under the suspension of operations (SoO) agreement.

The Arambai Tenggol, accused of looting police armories and attacking Kuki villages, claims it took up arms to protect Meitei villages during the ethnic violence. The police have confirmed the involvement of both Meitei and Kuki insurgents in the ongoing conflict.
