New Delhi, 14th Sept. Delhi Police on Saturday registered an FIR for the illegal bursting of firecrackers outside Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s official residence, despite a citywide ban on firecrackers till January 1. The fireworks were set off by supporters celebrating his release from Tihar Jail after more than five months in connection with the Delhi excise policy case.
The FIR was lodged under section 223(b) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which covers disobedience to public orders, carrying a penalty of up to one year in prison or a fine of ₹5,000. The case was filed at the Civil Lines Police station after a sub-inspector, deployed at the CM’s residence, reported the incident.
Both the BJP and Congress criticized the AAP over the violation. Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva slammed the party’s “hypocrisy,” pointing out that the AAP government had recently banned firecrackers to curb winter air pollution. Congress president Devender Yadav accused the AAP of undermining its own government’s ban.
In response, the AAP claimed that the fireworks were an expression of public joy over Kejriwal’s release, stating that people were “ecstatic” and it was an emotional moment for his supporters.
The firecracker ban, implemented by the Kejriwal government, aims to reduce pollution during the winter months in the capital.
