Kolkata, 17th Oct. The fast-unto-death by junior doctors in West Bengal, protesting for justice concerning the death of a post-graduate trainee from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, entered its 13th day on Thursday. The agitation is also centered around demands for enhanced workplace security.
Dr. Suvendu Mallick reported that six fasting doctors have been hospitalized due to a severe decline in their health. Currently, eight junior doctors continue their indefinite fast at the protest site in Esplanade, Kolkata.
The protesting medics are calling for justice for their deceased colleague and the immediate removal of state Health Secretary NS Nigam. Their demands also encompass the establishment of a centralized referral system for all hospitals and medical colleges in the state, implementation of a bed vacancy monitoring system, and the formation of task forces to ensure essential provisions, including CCTV, on-call rooms, and washrooms at healthcare facilities.
In addition, the junior doctors are urging for increased police protection in hospitals, the recruitment of permanent women police personnel, and the swift filling of vacant positions for doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers.
The junior doctors initiated a ‘cease-work’ strike following the alleged rape and murder of their fellow medic at RG Kar hospital on August 9. They concluded a previous 42-day stir on September 21 after receiving assurances from the state government regarding their demands.
