Exit Polls Predict BJP Victory in Delhi, AAP Rejects Results

Delhi went to the polls on Wednesday, choosing its next government for the next five years. The election saw a fierce battle between the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which banked on its welfare schemes, and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which criticized the lack of progress in the capital over the last decade under AAP’s rule.

Exit polls conducted after the voting have suggested a potential win for the BJP, predicting a comeback for the party in Delhi after nearly 27 years, marking the end of Arvind Kejriwal’s AAP government. Seven out of ten exit polls have given the BJP a clear majority, while AAP is predicted to secure between 20-25 seats, far from the 62-seat majority it previously enjoyed. Most exit polls have also predicted a dismal performance for Congress, forecasting no more than three seats.

Exit poll results from major agencies such as Chanakaya Strategies, JVC, Poll Diary, P-Marq, People’s Insight, DV Research, and People’s Pulse all indicate a victory for the BJP. Meanwhile, a few polls, including Mind Brink, Matrize, and WeePreside, have forecast a majority for AAP.

However, AAP has dismissed these exit poll predictions. Party leader Sushil Gupta expressed confidence, stating, “This is our fourth election, and every time exit polls did not show AAP making the government in Delhi. Arvind Kejriwal has worked for the people of Delhi. We will see the results in favor of the Aam Aadmi Party and form the government.”

The 2020 exit polls, which also predicted a close race, turned out to be incorrect, with AAP winning a resounding victory with 62 of 70 seats. In 2015, AAP had swept the polls with 67 seats, and in 2013, the party secured 28 seats in its debut election.

Predictions for the 2025 elections vary: India Today-Axis My India poll projected AAP to win between 59-68 seats, with the BJP securing only 2-11 seats. Times Now forecasted 47 seats for AAP and 23 for the BJP, while ABP News-C Voter predicted a range of 49-63 seats for AAP and 5-19 for BJP. Republic TV-Jan Ki Baat gave AAP 48 to 61 seats and BJP between 9-21.

Despite the exit poll predictions, many caution that these surveys can be inaccurate. In the past, exit polls have failed to capture the true sentiment of voters, often being proven wrong in several elections.

The final results will determine if the BJP is indeed able to reclaim power after 1998, or if Arvind Kejriwal’s AAP will continue to lead the capital.
