EAM Jaishankar Meets Former Iceland President, Discusses Arctic Cooperation

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held talks with Olafur Ragnar Grimsson, the former President of Iceland and Chairman of the Arctic Circle, on Thursday, focusing on collaborative opportunities in the Arctic region. The meeting underscored India’s growing interest in engaging with the Arctic on climate, sustainability, and geostrategic issues.

Taking to social media, Jaishankar shared his thoughts on the interaction, stating, “Pleased to meet the former President of Iceland and Chairman of @_Arctic_Circle @ORGrimsson. Discussed the activities of the Arctic Circle and the potential for deeper cooperation.”

The Arctic Circle, known for fostering dialogue on Arctic affairs, has become increasingly relevant as nations explore sustainable development and strategic interests in the region. Jaishankar’s meeting with Grimsson signals India’s intent to play a larger role in shaping the global Arctic discourse.

As the new year begins, Jaishankar also took a moment to highlight India’s diplomatic strides in 2024. Sharing a video recap on X, he wrote, “2024 saw a foreign policy that positioned Bharat as a #Vishwabandhu. Here’s to another year of new opportunities, deepening partnerships and a steadfast commitment to Bharat First and Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam!”

The video showcased key moments from his tenure, including high-level meetings, international summits, and his reappointment as External Affairs Minister following the Lok Sabha elections. Among the highlights were his discussions with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, his address at the Doha Forum, and his participation in the Quad summit.
