External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Thursday underscored the need for deeper regional cooperation to address pressing security and economic challenges facing BIMSTEC nations. Speaking at the 20th BIMSTEC Ministerial Meeting, he highlighted the threats posed by terrorism, cybercrime, and illegal trade while urging member countries to take a more ambitious approach to collaboration.
At a time of global uncertainty, Jaishankar stressed that regional partnerships must evolve to effectively tackle modern threats. He called for the creation of robust frameworks to combat cross-border crimes, including drug trafficking and human smuggling.
Jaishankar pointed to the changing global order, noting that the traditional power structures that once dictated international affairs are giving way to a more decentralized system. He emphasized that BIMSTEC nations must take control of their own futures by working together rather than relying on external powers.
He also highlighted the shared history and common interests of nations surrounding the Bay of Bengal, urging them to harness their cultural and economic ties to build a more connected and prosperous region. He pointed out that despite the potential for stronger trade and investment, BIMSTEC countries have yet to fully capitalize on the opportunities available.
Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s commitment to enhancing connectivity in the BIMSTEC region, particularly through its northeastern states. He noted that India’s extensive coastline and geographic position place it at the center of efforts to improve transportation, trade, and infrastructure links across South and Southeast Asia.
He also highlighted the importance of the Trilateral Highway, which will extend from India’s northeast to Myanmar and Thailand, ultimately linking the region to the Pacific Ocean. This project, he noted, will not only boost trade but also strengthen cultural and social ties among BIMSTEC nations.
As BIMSTEC completes 28 years, Jaishankar called on member nations to adopt a forward-thinking approach, using both traditional partnerships and modern technological advancements to build a stronger, more resilient regional alliance.
