New Delhi, 3rd Feb. In a sharp attack on Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday criticized the Delhi Chief Minister’s unfulfilled promises, particularly his vow to clean the Yamuna River. During a public meeting in Hauz Qazi Chowk, Mr. Gandhi dared Mr. Kejriwal to take a dip in the polluted Yamuna, which the AAP leader had vowed to cleanse within five years.
“He said he would clean the Yamuna and even take a dip in it, but it is still dirty,” Gandhi remarked. “I would ask him to drink the water, and we’ll meet in the hospital afterward,” he added, mocking Kejriwal’s failed commitment.
Gandhi also lashed out at the AAP’s leadership, calling out the party’s “core team” for lacking representation from marginalized communities. Holding up a pamphlet showing the faces of top AAP leaders like Manish Sisodia, Atishi, and Sanjay Singh, he claimed the party’s inner circle consisted solely of the elite. “How many of these nine people belong to the Dalit, OBC, or Muslim community?” he asked.
He further compared Kejriwal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that both share similar characteristics, with Modi speaking openly and Kejriwal staying silent when needed. “There is no difference between Modi and Kejriwal,” Gandhi said, adding that Kejriwal’s team “disappears” during crises, much like Modi’s approach to divisive politics.
The Congress leader also framed the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections as a battle between two ideologies: one of “unity,” championed by Congress, and one of “hatred,” represented by BJP-RSS. Gandhi stated that while Modi currently serves as Prime Minister, “No one will remember him when he steps down, just as no one remembers Godse,” referring to Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin.
The Delhi Assembly elections are set for February 5, with votes to be counted on February 8.
